About Granada

This amazing city emanates charm in every one of its corners, in the Alhambra, in the Albaycín, in its little labyrinthine streets of Moorish spirit and incense smell; the colors of the Andalusian mythology, blue, green, red... get mixed up in Granada. Its people transmit the joy of their extrovert character. You can breathe the passion, magic and poetry.

Moving around

You have to walk around Granada on foot, get lost in its labyrinthine streets, rest in the shade in its squares, explore the Albaycín... It's the best way not to let any of the charms of this magic city escape.

Out & About

The old Moorish neighborhood of the city, the Albaycín, is one of the places you can't miss. Once there, in the viewpoint of San Nicolás you'll enjoy the magnificent views. The Cathedral is also a must as well as the little streets surrounding it. A magical moment is the sunset against the Alhambra, it's an awesome view that you won't ever forget. When you plan your visit to the Alhambra, you have to keep in mind that there are shifts, in the morning, in the afternoon and other one at night, and that you'll need several hours to enjoy it completely. The number of visitors is limited so it's better if you buy the ticket in advance. You can't miss either the Cartuja or the Parque García Lorca. In Sacromonte, you have to visit the caves in which you'll experience flamenco in its purest form. There's also the possibility to sleep in one of the caves. To rest from all the walking, there's nothing better than relax in the Arabic baths and travel back in time, to the Moorish period of Granada. You can also regain your forces in one of the charming teterías.

What's going on in

The Semana Santa (Holy Week) of Granada has been declared of International Tourist Interest. It takes place in the Albaycín which makes the celebration something unique also thanks to the beauty of its pasos. The Cruces celebration, in May, is also an important date in the calendar of the city. The Feria del Corpus Christi begins every year a Monday at 00:00h with the alumbrado. It's the festivity of the city and during that time you can enjoy yourself with Fiestas Taurinas or in the casetas. At the end of June, the International Festival of Music and Dance takes place in the Alhambra. Granada also celebrates its Jazz Festival which has seen figures such as Tete Montoliu, Dizzy Gillespie or Herbie Hancock.

Shopping

Granada is the city of the craftwork where you can buy pottery or handmade guitars. Next to the Plaza Nueva and around Calderería Nueva and Calderería Vieja you'll find cosmetics, perfumes and clothes. The markets are very interesting too. The market in Plaza Larga offers flowers and fruit.

What's cooking?

The Moorish legacy of Granada reflects itself also in the gastronomy. Some of the typical dishes are: conejo al ajillo (rabbit in garlic), habas con jamón (beans with cured ham), papas a lo pobre con huevo y pimientos fritos (roast potatoes with eggs and fried peppers), gazpacho andaluz or Sacromonte omelet. Ir de tapas in Granada is a tradition, almost a ritual, a way of life. Each mesón or tavern has its own particular charm. The best zones for tapas are the surroundings of the Plaza de Toros, Plaza Nueva, which, despite its name, is the oldest in the city, Carrera del Darro or Paseo de los Tristes. In Granada, when you order a beer, they'll give you a tapa for free.

Weather

The climate in Granada is hot during summer, with temperatures that rise above 30º, and cold in winter. It rains mostly in winter, during summer rains are scarce. Ski lovers can come to Granada in winter and enjoy the great ski slopes of Sierra Nevada.

Practical information

When you are in Granada, you can make the most of it and visit Sierra Nevada, the only ski resort in Andalusia, one of the many beach villages (less than an hour away) or the Alpujarra with its beautiful white villages.

So...

Granada is poetry, tradition, joy. Get lost in its magic. As Lorca said: "Come to Granada, muchacha".
